In 2000 the Board of Directors announced the first Official "MM
Etching on Granite" fund-raising project.
The Board commissioned Doug Sorem,
an award-winning artist, to create a series of 5 Minneapolis-Moline
etchings on granite. The etchings are designed to bring something
new to the club and to establish a unique and valuable piece of
art depicting Minneapolis-Moline history.
For this series of five, Artist Doug Sorem is creating one 12"
x 12" etching on black granite of a Moline tractor. Each etching
will carry the official Minneapolis-Moline Collectors logo and will
be numbered 1 of 1. The etchings are displayed at the winter convention
and sold by auction at the summer show.
We anticipate that these one-of-a-kind MM etchings will be
valuable collectibles. The money raised from the auction helps
support the Club's worthy projects such as our annual scholarship,
the preservation of our Minneapolis-Moline heritage, and the education
of the public through various outreach projects to interest the
next generation in our MM legacy.
It is only with the support and efforts from you--those of you
who can remember the Minneapolis-Moline heritage first-hand--that
the great Minneapolis-Moline heritage will be remembered in the
future!
First MM Etching Goes to Highest Bidder in Split-second Bidding
The first granite etching, a Twin City 40, in a series of five by
artist Doug Sorem went to high bidder Dan Shema at the 2000 Waverly
Summer Show.
The bidding on the open, silent auction was slow the first day
of the show. But as the deadline of 4 PM on the last day drew closer,
the interest mounted and bidding increased. Each hour closer to
the 4 o'clock hour, brought in bids increasing by $25. Within the
final minutes a crowd gathered to watch two enthusiastic bidders
duel it out with pens. Bill Ellis and Dan Shima were literally on
top of each other as they vied to out-bid one another. When the
clock struck 4:00, Dan Shima had the final bid of $475 on the page.
2001 Etching
The 2001 granite etching depicts a Moline Plow Company Universal
D tractor. This one-of-a-kind etching will be auctioned to the highest
bidder at the Summer Show banquet in Adrian, Missouri. (Photo not
yet available.) The money earned by sale of the etchings will help
the club with its mission of educating the public about the Minneapolis-Moline
companies and their predecessors. Don't let this opportunity to
own one of these unique MM collectibles pass you by.
